What is life coaching?
A counselor comes by and you ask her for help.
The counselor might begin with questions about your history, the history of the hole, your history in the hole, and your feelings about the hole. All you want is to move forward down the road.
Once the counselor is involved they usually become the expert in your life, not you.
Counseling is not coaching.
The next person down the road is a consultant.
You ask the consultant for help. The consultant is more forward-looking than the counselor, but only for the immediate future. He will write out a plan to give you a strategy for how you can get out of the hole.
It is likely the plan will only work for this hole. However, you know there are probably more holes down the road. Each time you come to a different hole, the consultant will have to write you a new plan because he is the expert, not you.
Consulting is not Coaching.
The coach arrives. The coach sees you in the hole and observes, “So you are in a hole.” You agree and say, “I want out of the hole.”
The coach asks, “What’s in the way?” Coaching has started.
Coaching is always forward-focused, starting with where you are and looking to where you want to go. The coach helps you discover your greatness, power, and the opportunities that surround you.
You are the expert, not the coach. You know where you have been, where you are at, and where you want to go. That makes you the expert.
Your coach is your partner in your commitment to be your highest self.
